Able 12 series guide and reading order

The Pacific War from inside the tank.

By Matt Renner · Published October 18, 2026

The Able 12 series follows a U.S. Marine tank crew through four Pacific campaigns during World War II. Beginning in the jungles of Guadalcanal and ending amid the brutal fighting on Okinawa, the stories show the war from inside cramped armored vehicles operating in some of the most difficult terrain imaginable.

Written by Matt Renner, each book is a short, fast military-fiction story built around historically grounded combat, crew dynamics and the relationship between Marine tanks and the infantry fighting beside them.

What is the Able 12 series?

Able 12 is the call sign of a Marine tank commanded by Sergeant Tom “Red” Kincaid.

When the crew first enters combat on Guadalcanal, they are inexperienced Marines operating an M3 Stuart light tank in dense jungle. Visibility is limited, communications are difficult and danger can appear only yards away.

As the war advances, the crew moves into Sherman tanks and faces increasingly difficult missions. Rain, mud, reefs, beaches, fortified positions and hidden anti-tank guns all place different demands on the men and their machines.

The series stays close to the crew. Readers experience each battle through narrow vision ports, shouted intercom commands and the noise and confusion inside the tank. The stories also follow the Marines outside, where infantry and armor must work together at close range to overcome Japanese defenses.

The Able 12 books in reading order

The series follows the historical progression of the Pacific War and is best read in the following order.

1. Able 12: Guadalcanal Ambush

Guadalcanal, 1942

Sergeant Kincaid and his crew enter combat in an M3 Stuart light tank. A mission through the jungle becomes a point-blank fight in which armor, infantry and nerve are tested against an enemy concealed by the terrain.

Guadalcanal Ambush introduces the crew and begins their journey across the Pacific.

2. Able 12: Gloucester Bunkers

Cape Gloucester, 1943

Now fighting from an M4A1 Sherman, Able 12 advances through the rain and mud of New Britain. Thick jungle, poor ground and hidden Japanese bunkers turn every movement into a struggle.

The second story places the crew in a campaign where the environment can be almost as dangerous as the enemy.

3. Able 12: Peleliu Landing

Peleliu, 1944

Able 12 crosses the reef during an opposed amphibious landing and drives inland from the beach. The crew faces prepared defenses, intense fire and Japanese armor during one of the Pacific War’s hardest-fought island battles.

Peleliu Landing follows the crew into a faster and more destructive battle than anything they have previously experienced.

4. Able 12: Okinawa Run

Okinawa, 1945

In the final story, Able 12 is pressed into a dangerous new role. The crew must carry Marines, supplies and wounded men across exposed ground while Japanese anti-tank guns wait for a clear shot.

By Okinawa, the surviving crewmen are experienced veterans, but experience cannot remove the danger—or guarantee that everyone will make it home.

Do the books need to be read in order?

Each Able 12 story presents a complete combat mission and can be read on its own. Reading the series in order, however, reveals the crew’s progression from inexperienced tankers on Guadalcanal to hardened veterans on Okinawa.

The changing vehicles and campaigns also show how Marine armored warfare developed as American forces moved across the Pacific.

Readers who want the full journey should begin with Guadalcanal Ambush and continue through the four books in campaign order.

Who is the series for?

Able 12 is written for readers who enjoy:

  • Fast-moving World War II action fiction
  • Historically grounded military stories
  • U.S. Marine Corps and Pacific War settings
  • Tank combat and combined infantry–armor operations
  • Short fiction that can be finished in a single sitting
  • Ground-level stories focused on the people fighting the battle

The books emphasize action and authenticity without requiring the reader to be a military historian.
